North American USA / Canada - Health Care Heroes Contracting COVID-19

United States of America:                                                                                                            Blake Farmer from Nashville Public Record [NPR] wrote a health news article on April 15, 2020 reporting the following:

“Nearly 9,300 U.S. health care workers contracted COVID-19, and 27 have died. A majority of those who tested positive (55%) think they were exposed while at work.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released preliminary data on  Infections among frontline health workers. Nearly three-quarters are women and more than a third had some underlying health condition. The median age is 42.  About 8% of those who tested positive didn't have symptoms. And the majority (90%) didn't have to be hospitalized. But as many as 5% did require intensive care. A third of the health care workers who died were over 65 years old.The increased prevalence of severe outcomes in older [health care providers] should be considered when mobilizing retired [health care providers] to increase surge capacity," the authors conclude.”

Goggle search for the number of Canadian health care workers contracting COVID-19 is currently reported separately by topic, city or province:

  • March 23, 2020 Global News reports 13 in Toronto…
  • March 31, 2020 Global News reports 77 Alberta Provincially…
  • April 7, 2020 Barry Ellsworth wrote an article about Canadian health care workers making wills due to COVID-19.  The sub-title stated, “Doctor suggests treatment of COVID-19 patients could be a suicide mission.”

He also stated, “At least 451 health care workers in Ontario have tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 6. That is 10% of cases in the province and Premier Doug Ford said there is enough PPE to last one more week. No figures were available on health-care worker deaths.”

  • April 19, 2020 CBC News reported there are more than 600 in Ontario…

I do not know where one can find the collective, accumulative data, however, I  believe this is important, noteworthy reporting someone needs to find out, keep track of and report to the public.

Take good care of each other out there…

Peace + Love Linda
