The Magic of Fairytales with Jonathan Young, Ph.D.
Enchanting stories from long ago offer assistance and comfort when our lives take surprising turns. These tales connect us with dimensions beyond ordinary experience. We will discuss Little Red Riding Hood to see how timeless characters can provide guidance for our own quests.
Dr. Young will draw on his work with Joseph Campbell to explore what we can learn from the dark forest parts of our journeys. In a spirit of play, we will discuss this strange adventure about a visit to the wise old woman of the woods. Focus is on how classic tales help us claim the treasures of the inner life.
Bio: Jonathan Young, Ph.D. -- storyteller and psychologist -- assisted Joseph Campbell at seminars and was the founding curator of the Joseph Campbell Archives & Library. He teaches at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara and Meridian University in San Francisco. His articles and books focus on personal mythology. Sections are posted at folkstory.com – along with videos and audios on mythic stories.
“The wonder is that the characteristic efficacy to touch and inspire deep creative centers dwells in the smallest nursery fairy tale—as the flavor of the ocean is contained in a droplet or the whole mystery of life within the egg of a flea. For the symbols of mythology are not manufactured; they cannot be ordered, invented, or permanently suppressed. They are spontaneous productions of the psyche, and each bears within it, undamaged, the germ power of its source." —Joseph Campbell
