Event Description

Presented by the Joseph Campbell Foundation Mythological RoundTable® Group of Sacramento

Sophia (wisdom),  viriditas (the greening life force of the soul), medicinal herbs, illuminations and art, music and poetry are some of the components of Hildegard's holistic vision.

Professor Jaoudi's presentation will explore the work of the great 12th century mystic as illustrated in 26 illuminations, expanding our understanding of the connection between spirit and nature, and offering us the opportunity to celebrate and "recognize the ecologically sacred."*

Maria Jaoudi is Professor of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University, Sacramento, where she teaches courses on world religions and cultures, mysticism, ecology, and film. The author of Christian and Islamic Spirituality and Christian Mysticism East & West, Dr. Jaoudi is also a painter of spiritual themes and participates in juried exhibits.

The faculty website also has information that might be helpful:  http://www.csus.edu/i...

A quick search on the Internet will show the depth and breadth of Hildegard's timeless contributions to the world as well as on-line recordings of her compositions.  We will play some of her healing chants before and after the meeting.

To prepare for the meeting, you may want to read:

*Medieval and Renaissance Spirituality: Discovering the Treasures of the Great Masters by Maria Jaoudi.  The paperback edition is now available.  http://www.amazon.com...

Suggested viewing: "Vision:  From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen" can be seen at  http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Vision-From-the-Life-of-Hildegard-von-Bingen/70125543#height1883 if you have Netflix.  This German-made film provides a glimpse of what life was like for Hildegard the woman in medieval times.

Free to view on-line is an episode from Global Spirit on The Mystical Experience at http://www.linktv.org/globalspirit/mystical which includes the speakers from the three Western wisdom traditions.

As usual, meetings are free, but we would welcome small voluntary donations to be forwarded for the maintenance of the Joseph Campbell Foundation's Mythological RoundTable® Program.

The cafe is open early for our group - please support the venue!

Get your parking place early for Second Saturday Art Walk.

Wonderful. Hildegard has been a favorite of mine for over 15 years now. One of my earlier papers was called "Warrior on the Rhine." Glad you are continuing to keep her life and works alive.
