The verdict is in: The President of the United States of America has abused his power, bullied another nation to provide him with personal political benefit, and covered this up in unprecedented ways. The Mueller investigation also identified many crimes he was party to as a candidate as well as numerous instances of obstruction of justice. He avoided being charged only because of a Department of Justice policy. Yet it seems as if many Americans don’t care. The Republicans in the Senate did not, either. Has all pretense of being a moral nation been sacrificed to an inflated image of strongman, bully power?

Americans tend to be dreamers, informed by the Seeker archetype to strive for a better life. Many of us still believe in “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” as a God-given right for all. Our success as a nation depends on the current political environment being a blip, not who we are. I write this because I know that so many fellow Americans are facing painful demoralization and disillusionment about our country. I feel it, too.

My thesis: Right now, the President and the Republican Party are possessed by a primal, shadowy form of the Warrior archetype that threatens to engulf us all, as those of us who understand their threat get pulled into seeing them as our enemy. As the American people’s attitudes were becoming more liberal, Newt Gingrich in the 1990s convinced the Republicans to declare war on the Democrats. Mitch McConnell has gone so far as to interpret this to mean that the Senate was not be allowed to even vote on President Obama’s nominee for a Supreme Court seat in the final year of his presidency. More recently, McConnell has not allowed bills to come up for debate in the Senate that come over from the majority Democratic House. And now the Senate refuses to address the facts of a President’s criminal behavior—behavior that undermines our Constitution. Instead, they blame the messenger—the Democrats.

The Warrior archetype in its shadowy forms is all about gaining power for one’s own group, blaming an enemy for one’s problems. The issue today is that the Republicans apparently see Democrats as the enemy even more than Vladimir Putin and Russia. This culture war, if we all fully join it, leaves our country undefended from external threats. The job of the Warrior is to protect us, but the Warrior’s strategies—war, propaganda (fake news, lies), and coercion—cannot protect us from climate change, the growing income/wealth gap, and nuclear proliferation, and the danger right now of a nuclear war started by power struggles between autocrats or by terrorists. We need the positive Warrior, of course, to have the courage to address the real issues before us and to have the will to do what needs to be done.

We have seen our Earth from space. We know how fragile human life is. Our Seeker selves have to realize that there is no place to run to in the foreseeable future. There can now be no Other as enemy; the problem is in us. The more we focus on human enemies, the more our demise is assured. We are in a time when actual wars, where each side tries to kill the other, have become dysfunctional. War now exists in cyberspace, in economics, but mostly in ideas. We need the Sage to face the facts staring us in the face to counter fake news. There are people among us who simply love to be entertained by a master showman who illustrates the manipulative shadowy ability of the Magician, who can influence opinion through illusions. We saw this with the State of the Union address. What we need in our leaders and in ourselves is the evolved Magician that knows how to change consciousness to change outcomes, expanding our capacities to embrace a consciousness adequate to solving the major problems that threaten our democracy and our ability to head off the crises ahead. Most of us already know that the Senate vote undermines our Constitution, but some do not care. The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution can remind us of what needs to be restored and why we need to care. 

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

We will have Justice only if no one is above the law. We cannot have domestic Tranquility if a people is at war with one another, even a war of words. Certainly, we need to stop scapegoating and focus on caring for all of us. To provide for the common defense, we need to figure out what we need to defend against, rather than escaping into denial and the blame game. We cannot promote the general welfare if our policies disproportionately benefit those who are already rich and powerful and if we focus our energies on undercutting government in the service of corporate power. We cannot secure the blessings of liberty to posterity if we do not address the most pressing problems before us and instead deplete our energies blaming refugees. 

In the Civil War, people shed their blood to extend democracy to all our citizens, revealing the best of the Warrior archetype in their time. Today we need to evolve the Warrior archetype to meet the challenges of our time, so that, as Abraham Lincoln put it, “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

My background is writing technical and scientific papers, in which every statement or claim requires supporting data or evidence.

While I've tried to support most of my claims with some form of evidence or data, that people can relate to, it's not always possible. 

During my research into earth goddesses like Asherah for example, I was able to contact  investigator/author Darlene Kosnik who had conducted serious analysis of the archeological evidence from the Levant, before, during and after Yahweh's era, and put it in her book "Asherah, History's Vanquished Goddess". Darlene has taken an academic, politically neutral approach to her investigations, as she compares physical evidence for traceability to certain cultures. She allows the reader to reach his own conclusions, which I have done, and used in my writings based on her evidence. In most cases, the evidence is not black and white but shades of grey.  She has not disagreed with anything I've sent her so far.

Steve, thank you for this beautiful sharing.  I'm so with you on what you are saying here.  I'd like to share your comments further if you do not mind to spiritual friends of mine, but first I will print them out to reflect on them further as part of my pandemic Seder/East meditation.   I've been doing research on the history of Christianity and yesterday was in deep grief about how much distortion as added, as you say, by political fictions. And, today grateful that the heart of what he taught was never entirely wiped away.

Ooops, I missed the last ginormous question. 

"outside force"...this comment refers to the law of inertia, which claims that all change is affected by outside forces acting on an object.

"therapist" can come from away with new ideas, or rise up from within the culture but with new ways of thinking and living. 

Let me whisper my sincere belief, that no one can save us, but each of us has the ability to discover the path to freedom, or create one, individually or with others.

So what's a therapist? A fixer? A facilitator? A wayshower? A healer by any other name?

A shaman is merely an instrument of healing, who accesses and uses powers beyond his own.  

A surgeon uses instruments to facilitate healing. A pharmacist dispenses mostly healthy chemicals, but he/she does not actually heal a patient.

My notion of a"state therapist" would be a healing leader, instead of a warring one. Does a healing leader rise up from the same culture, or does he have to come from away, with new ideas and ways of living to overlay and replace the old ways? Does change germinate from within or without?

I'll try to keep this short, but I'd like to offer two examples of spiritual leaders who belonged to a particular culture, but who used information from outside that culture to launch radical changes.

1. Siddhattha Gotama was raised within Indian culture, but isolated from the painful suffering of humanity just outside his palace door. He grew up in his own little protected world, not knowing pain and misery, and when he finally went out into the normal world he fell into despair over what his innocent eyes saw. After years of struggle, he finally found enlightenment while meditating in the uplifting energy field of an ancient fig tree, while under the protection of a snake. He shared his spiritual discoveries and knowledge gained from within, and not from his culture. The great buddha journeyed inward to find new information which slowly changed how humanity viewed the darkness inside, and the darkness outside of our bodies.

OUTCOME - Over time, Buddhism changed the warring culture of the Mongol nation to become one of the most gentle and non-violent societies.

2.  Jesus the Nazarene and Essene - this enigmatic person was apparently raised as an Essene, an extreme monastic sect living in isolation in the desert at Qumran. They heralded the end times, when the sons of light would battle the dark forces for the soul of humanity. As a member of the royal house of David, Jesus was educated in all the mystery schools of the day, from Egypt to Tibet. Holger Kersten traced his travels in: "Jesus Lived in India"[1983], based on remaining anecdotal evidence he found along the trade routes travelled by Jesus during his travels as an itinerant shaman. Hebrew communities lined the trade routes. So the biggest question that no one ever seems to ask about Jesus, is where did he get his spiritual information?

Was Jesus' message home grown, or divinely inspired and communicated?

Home grown ideas suggest a natural evolution of local spiritual culture, which is not connected to, or inspired by any external deity.

Divinely inspired information on the other hand, would mean an external force from away has come in, and provided a package of information that is radically different from the existing narratives shared by people living on the land.

When we push aside all the political fiction created by those who hijacked Jesus' ministry, like:

  • Hebrew extremist Saul of Tarsus [aka Paul the Heretic, 1st century CE], who injected orthodox Hebrew teachings into Jesus's ministry, the very ideas that Jesus had rejected.
  • Roman Emperor Constantine - an ambitious brutal murderer, whose complete editorial control over the contents of the bible remade Jesus into a deity, a Roman god, and who weaponized Christianity as Rome's religion of conquest [325 CE]. He used the cross to create a form of spiritual domination that would control the hearts and minds of Rome's huge slave population, as well as the nations colonized thru massive Roman violence.
  • English King Henry VIII - in the 16th century, the most immoral man in England fell into conflict with Rome over his penile agenda. The penile/ego driven English tyrant, Henry VIII, destroyed the spiritual aspirations of his people when he remade Christianity to his liking.

OUTCOME - for 17 centuries, Constantine's Christianity has viciously attacked and plundered the rest of the world for; land, goods and souls. Christianity has cursed this planet with blood and suffering, and left a path of genocidal destruction that will take humanity and the planet centuries to heal. 

The time for mythical heroes has passed. Now's the time to roll up our sleeves, and dig in to the human work ahead. It will require co-creating a new world that we want and welcome, instead of tolerating one that is imposed on us.

Tina Turner sang it beautifully with these amazing words...

At this moment Canada and the world are struggling with multiple crises that threaten the very foundations of what we call civilization. The pandemic is one of many but a very real threat. Great energies are in motion, and it feels like change is on the horizon waiting for the right invitation, moment, or conditions.

I think this has created a very unstable reality, but one that is susceptible to change. If we wish to be agents of positive change, I believe this is the time to learn to master and manipulate our own as well as external energies, and organize them into a new balanced system that supports the new reality we desire and create.

Oh, my last comment was to Mats and this one to Steve.  I take your point about what happens when countries are in crisis.  Yet, it is not clear to me how we could redo everything, unless that is what comes out of the current Pandemic.  I know I have no interest in being partisan during it.  I just don't want people to die unnecessarily.  This is shaking things up.

What is the outside force--the therapist--you have in mind?

Whoops, well that would not be good.  In my view any of us can be possessed for a time by an archetype and the antidote is to become conscious of how that archetype needs to evolve in us.  I think the Republicans have a lot to offer and I care that what I see as possession caused by the culture war which tends to lock archetypes in.  Good catch on your part.  I do not want to demonize them.  I want us all to stop projecting onto others.  And, I was in shock seeing our legislators refusing even to address the face before them.  I appreciate your comment.  Actually, I do have some issue with the Warrior archetype, so might well be projecting.  I so wish we would stop having to kill each other when we differ.
