The Great Journey

“The greatest of emotions is fear, and the greatest fear is fear of the unknown,”(Lovecraft, 2003). So said the horror writer H.P. Lovecraft who knew quite a lot about what frightens mankind. Indeed the fear of the unknown is inflated onto the fear of death,(Nichols,1980). What happens after death is something that is utterly unknown to the psyche of man,(Jung,1958). Metaphysics is something that we all ponder, in particular the topics of the afterlife. On a subjective level, we all have…

The End?

Posted on March 18, 2012 at 9:32pm 0 Comments

Every major stage in our life’s journey can lead us to not only have feelings of wonder and joy, but can also lead to feelings of despair and confusion. We must make decisions that could affect our wellbeing and our mental health. One major change for seniors is the idea of living in a retirement community or living at home. We cliché have this image of elderly people getting shipped away to nursing homes and yet this is not the case. “Approximately 70 percent of the elderly live in a family…

Projecting onto the elderly

“Thirty-seven years ago, Congress passed the Age Discrimination crimination in Employment Act(ADEA) which makes it illegal for an employer or union to discharge, refuse to hire, or otherwise discriminate on the basis of age.”(Cox, 2011). It is obvious from the passing of this bill that the elderly in the american workforce have faced discrimination and hardships at the hands of their younger counterparts. Why do younger person’s discriminate against the elderly in the workplace and in…

Individuation and Aging

“Generally people who are active in a religious faith tend to get through difficult times better,” says Al Siebert, Ph.D., author of The Resiliency Advantage. (Cox 2011) Many psychologists have reached the conclusion that people with high religious convictions and who participated in religious rituals/activities could overcome depression faster than their non-religious counterparts. In Jungian Analytical Psychology, dealing with the divine mystery of religion, is really to deal with the…

I've got the MFT and just finished the MA in depth psychology going on to the PhD. MFT was great with exterior systemics, depth psych with internal systemics. Your studies in comparative religions will also serve you well when/if you head down the Jungian path. Keep in touch.

A belated welcome Colin,

Glad you found and decided to join the Alliance. Your studies of Islamic theology sound fascinating as an addition to the Alliance. I've noticed recently that many Universities are advertising for professors who can teach about Islam. Your future path? As to the study of sexuality, Jung gives us a chance to look at this through many lenses. Again, welciome and I look forward to your posts.

Hi Colin. Welcome to the Alliance. It's great you've found the community. Hopefully, once you have a chance to explore here a bit, you'll find a dynamic group of likeminded people who are all deeply drawn by the field of depth psychology.

While there are many Jungian analysts and clinical psychologists here, our members come from many walks of life--artists, writers, doctors, healing professionals, counselors, students, business people, etc--so there is much cross-disciplinary knowledge and experience here to be shared.

On that note, I hope you'll find opportunities to engage as you browse the vast content and interact with others. You may want to consider joining the online book club if you haven’t already—There's a new author each month, and you can jump in at anytime and participate at whatever level you wish.

Even if you don't have the book for this month, it's all done via writing in an open forum, so you can read all the comments that have gone on so far and get a feel for what's happening. In February, we are featuring a wonderful new book from Jungian Analyst Erel Shalit," The Cycle of Life", as well as a special online study group on Astrology with longtime astrologer Kathleen Burt. March will bring a new book from Dr. Michael Conforti, a specialist in archetypes and new sciences, "Field, Form, And Fate".

In case you need detailed help getting started and navigating the site, you can use the following link--and please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions at all! I look forward to seeing you around the community~Bonnie Bright, Founder
