Perhaps new myths can stitch us back up?!

Comment by Kelly Fafard on June 19, 2012 at 6:36pm

I was at a hording workshop last week and the instructor provided us this amazing quote, "The only difference between you, me, and the other guy, is our stories" When you know someone's story the "garbage" or stuff they hord takes shape... become symbols, if you will.  The story provides understanding and lights a path through the stuff.

Very cool, Kelly! We have a bunch of Nature-related symbols in our group tool kit. I am looking forward to how we interpret and perhaps create new (myths) stories together as we move forward! With new myths, we can construct a better path thru the garbage.

I like the comment by Kelly regarding the circle as symbol of equality, and it takes on more meaning when we view the circle, the mandala, as representing the Self, the infinite Self, no beginning, no end, all aspects in balance, equal, in harmony.

"I am looking forward to how we interpret and perhaps create new (myths) stories together as we move forward! With new myths, we can construct a better path thru the garbage." [Willi]

Willi, your persistence is becoming rather alluring and I'm coming around to seeing that, among other things, a new mythology is needed to help heal the world. You are beginning to capture my imagination. But how do we create a new myth? What are the elements needed, how are those elements connected, how is the story then disseminated, in such a way that it is accepted and understood. Most people probably do not see myth as the exploration of the relation of the Self, of our existential concerns, to reality, but rather just a good (if even that) story.

I'm seeing that the reason a lot of "movements" don't have much influence is that they are not able to weave archetypes together into a story that is felt as being meaningful. The movies industry has this figured out, with Star Wars being such classic example. And, the advertising industry has really figured this out, how to use symbols that move around in the unconscious, below our radar, and get us to buy buy buy!

Can we counter the myth of the necessity to buy to be a real fulfilled person with a myth that leads to desires of simplifying life?

But, I think I previously commented on this, can an effective meaningful myth, one that leads us to change our behavior, actually be created, cobbled together, or does such a myth need to come about organically, to arise, of it's own voilition out of the collective unconscious and move into the collective conscious.

I think you're on the right track Willi, just don't grasp how we can go about this, if it is even the sort of thing that we can consciously will into being.

I have no doubt, however, that we need a different story about who we are and what we do.

Hey Christian - I hear you on the nuts and bolts thing. We will tackle at least four myth methods to "make" new myths" in the days ahead! - WOX

Yesterday, I attended the Jung and Neuroscience video-conference at Sonoma State University (sponsored by the Psychology Department). The following is taken from Stanley Krippner's presentation A Neuromythological Approach to Working with Dreams:.

Myths Evolve

1) The prevailing myth is outmoded.

2) A counter-myth emerges, challenging prevailing myth.

3) Dialectic between the old myth and the counter myth emerges a new myth which embodies the best elements of both.

4) And is synthesized into a new guiding myth, presented as a single statement.

5) Translated into real life.

The new myth is stronger as it embodies the positive elements of the old and the new; the old myth can sabatoge the new myth due to the grip that the old myth has on us.

Thoughts:

How do we know the old myth is outmoded, not much point in replacing a viable myth.

In a conscious building of new myths we need to be able to identify the parts of the old myth that are viable and need to be incorporated into the new one.

How do we engage in the dialecticeprocess to emerge a new myth?

Hmm, love the feedback and challenging questions from your experience. I keep Campbell's journey, initiation and hero triad front and center in my new myths. This structure is often found in old and new global stories, yes?

Tell us more about: a "new guiding myth, presented as a single statement" and "Translated into real life?" "Or how Krippner identifies the parts of the old myth that are viable?"

When is myth outdated? When your parents skip it for something else at bed time?

YES! New myths require PROCESS, like this one! And there are others to consider.... See my blurb in the newsletter for a sneak peak?

"Tell us more about: a [a] "new guiding myth, presented as a single statement" and [b]"Translated into real life?"  [c]"Or how Krippner identifies the parts of the old myth that are viable?"" ~ Willi Paul

a) Let's take the Julia Butterfly myth, how might we say that in one statement?

b) Translating into real life: here I see two things, one is actually having it change our lives in the sense that we do something different now such as more respectful of trees, planting trees, using less paper, having a reverence for wooden objects. The other that I see is to create a ritual: Perhaps every Arbor Day is when one plants a tree; or perhaps on a regular basis one goes to a high point to look at, feel, and experience the environment as a great expanse of landscape .

c) I don't have any ideas how to go about this, but it really appealed to me. The old myth archetypes really don't go away despite the changing world. Perhaps what we need to do is identify in old myths the archetypes that still resonate; then identify archetypal energies that we would like to have new resonations about, then engage in coniunctio and bring together two opposites for maximum effect.

I believe that we have new archetypes / symbols to use, something I relayed to Bonnie in our video interview last year. Here are some of the new archetypes from my recent trek into sounds & new mythology:

Question: Can archetypes be sonic and graphic symbols?
