  • Thanks, but the chronology seems to be incomplete. We know, for instance, that Jung was reading George Mead's book on Gnosticism as early as 1915. There is also an oblique reference to "gnostic" in Jung's doctoral dissertation (1902).

  • I don’t know the answer to the question but Jung wrote that he grew up in a two hundred year old house with three hundred year old furniture. His father’s vocation as a preacher notwithstanding, I would imagine the house library might have had some books with gnostic references.

Gnosticism would not have appeared as heretical as alchemy, and we know that he read and was influenced by Faust from his early years. Is there any mention of the content of the books in the house in Basel where he grew up?

I would also think that he would have been familiar with Gnosticism much earlier than 1915.

    • I've been wondering that too. Anyone have a list of books in the library of Jung's father?

      • Jung’s paternal grandfather (Carl Gustav Sr.) was a Freemason and a connection between Freemasonry and Gnosticism is known to exist. Some even speculate that one of the most notable Freemason symbols, a square and compass that often has a “G” in the middle, stands for “Gnosis.”

Maybe Jung got his knowledge base—or at least his curiosity aroused—during time spent with his grandfather, and to be sure, his grandfather must have had books related to the topic...
