I am seeking a member to post a book review on this site. I am the publisher of “Underworld and Archetypes Fully Illustrated” a short but heavily illustrated book discussing Hell in Jungian terms. Psychotherapist James Bennett describes himself as an observer of culture through the lens of mythology and archetypal perspective. His book rotates around the concept of the mythological Underworld, examining if from many perspectives. From one angle, he proposes, hell and heaven may simply represent the body and intellect become excessively polarized; so opposing of each other as to destroy life. In another chapter he declares the mediaeval threat of hell as future demonic persecution to be a corruption of some ancient legends that had beneficial purpose. And could that be to guide a sufferer towards recovery? Indeed many who have suffered serious illness, trauma or addiction describe their experience as “going through hell”. Reading I began to feel that if we could work on sifting out the essence of those legends could it be sound advice handed down to us by the healing professionals of thousands of years ago. Bennett asks us to review the legends and study the 97 color photos and “allow the stories and images to sit with you and speak to you. This will spark your own connections and associations and open doors for you in unexpected and meaningful ways.”

  • This is intriguing. Some books I am reading now are opening my outlook to this perspective. I am finding these myths playing out in my dreams, so it may be a good book to read.
