Event Description

Join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary,
“The Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin,” showing the intellectual and artistic courage of a young Romanian conductor and his fellow prisoners at the infamous Terezin concentration camp.
It demonstrates their courage in performing the Verdi Requiem sixteen times as an act of defiance against their Nazi captors. The narrative is revealed through the lens of a contemporary conductor who, 70 years after the Shoah, performed the Requiem at Terezin as a tribute to those who suffered and died, and to educate and inspire us today. Participants will engage with the potent and mysterious ways music can sustain psyche and soul in the face of the diabolical: as protest, moral statement, subterfuge, and transformative vessel. The screening will be followed by discussion of the issues raised, including the intersection of psychology, spirit, and music.

This powerful film will be introduced by Karlyn M. Ward, PhD, LCSW. Dr. Ward, an analyst member of the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, is in private practice in Mill Valley. A musician, she has presented seminars on the psyche and music. Her participation in the chorus of a concert-drama performance of The Defiant Requiem led to her commitment to making this story more widely known.
