"HOLLYWOOD BEFORE THE CODE"
In this course, we'll bring a depth perspective to viewing six essential films from the fascinating Pre-Code era.
Proliferating from 1930 to 1934, Pre-Codes foreshadowed over three decades of sweeping movie censorship with their subversive, limit-pushing themes challenging outmoded social conventions.
The Great Depression, The New Woman, The Forgotten Man, postwar pacifism, Prohibition gangsters, and interracial romance provided revolutionary material for depicting a wounded American psyche both evolving and in turmoil.
These lost gems are surprisingly modern, sexually uninhibited, female-centric, morally complex, and socially conscious. Lively lectures and discussions will explore cultural, historical, mythic, and depth psychological patterns that inform these revelatory artistic touchstones.
